Occupational Therapy for More Confident and Successful Children

Locations in Salisbury, MD and Easton, MD

Transforming – “I can’t do that” – into
“Look, I’m doing it!.”

When you see your child struggle, your perspective shifts around the value of everyday activities. You no longer take for granted your child’s ability to get out the door in the morning, learn at school, or successfully be included in playground fun.

We get that! In occupational therapy, we address the skills, routines, and activities your child (and you) need for everyday life.

When you work with us, you get a dedicated partner guiding your child towards both specific therapy goals and overall confidence and well-being.

Your child might need occupational therapy if you notice challenges in the following areas…

  • Lacks coordination for playing on the playground or catching a ball

  • Fine motor challenges around cutting, handwriting, or fastening clothing

  • Pickiness about clothing or food that gets in the way of daily routines

  • Small frustrations lead to big, uncontrollable responses

  • Diagnosis of a developmental delay means extra support is needed to reach milestones

  • Difficulty performing self-care activities such as grooming, dressing, managing fasteners, and bathing

  • Writing takes too long, is tiring, or illegible

  • Seeks an excessive amount of  rough play, swinging, spinning, or jumping

What we work on in occupational therapy

OT works on any activity or area that is holding your child back in school, home, or daily life.

  • Strength and Motor Challenges

From sitting upright at the table to writing, putting on clothing, or playing on the playground – your child’s everyday activities require a wide range of motor skills. We look at the underlying developmental or physical factors and then engage in targeted activities to build strength, coordination, and body awareness for increased success in everyday life.

  • Cognitive Skills

Differences in how the brain works and processes information can impact your child’s ability to do school work or complete tasks at home. This can include problem-solving, following directions, visual and auditory processing, attention, and creating and following a plan. We address cognitive challenges in children by practicing skills and finding adaptive strategies for how your child uniquely thinks and learns.

  • Self-Regulation

Children (and adults) adjust and respond to tasks and events around them by regulating emotions and energy. Learning skills to improve self-regulation for children and caregivers can positively impact a wide range of daily activities to lessen frustration and stress for the whole family.

  • Sensory Processing

This is how the body and brain work together to understand and respond to the information of the senses. When this system is not working properly, you might see problems with movement, attention, or over-reactions to clothing or noises. We work with children and provide education to families on regulating those systems and using strategies to fulfill the needs of each child

  • Feeding Challenges

We support your child and family to progress towards improved food intake and more relaxing mealtimes with patience and knowledge based on a variety of positive techniques including the SOS approach to feeding.
